The Facts

NPGA said it “walked away with two major victories for the propane industry” from that Summer Standards Council meeting.

The first was about venting. Since 2015, NPGA said, two plastic vent pipe manufacturers “sought to burden gas appliance manufacturers, installers, and consumers” with a material that offered “no identifiable safety benefit.” A coalition of manufacturers sought to remove total-system testing “by mandating only UL 1738 listed venting systems in NFPA 54.” NPGA called that effort a “battle against affordability”, and the final August appeal “was denied by the Standards Council.”

Based on that decision, according to NPGA, “the 2027 publication of NFPA 54 will move forward with Sections 12.5.2 and 12.5.3 intact as written in the 2024 edition.” The existing language in those sections “do not prevent the use of UL 1738 materials, meaning consumer choice is retained.”

The second was a new standard. The Standards Council has approved the development of a new standards title, Mobile and Temporary Cooking Operations, NPGA said. That standard “will serve to replace Chapter 16 of NFPA 58 and Chapter 17 of NFPA 96,” including for equipment such as food trucks.
