How does a propane company get found in AI answers and Google Maps?
A propane company gets found when its name, address, hours, and reviews line up, when its Google Business Profile is complete, and when its site can be read as HTML. Structured data names the business. AI engines can read pages they are allowed to fetch. They cannot run the JavaScript a visitor's browser runs.
What is structured data?
Structured data is a small, hidden label on a page that names the business in a form a machine can parse. On a propane dealer site that usually means Organization or LocalBusiness facts: the name, the phone, the area served, the hours. It is not a visible keyword block. It is not a switch that moves a Maps pin.
It helps a system tell one entity from another and, in some cases, qualify a rich result. We emit it for clarity. We do not sell it as a way to get cited.
PIMS checks this layer and flags gaps. It does not go into the dealer's code. A dealer, or the dealer's web person, applies the one-line fix. Same pattern as robots.txt: audit, then a fix you apply.
What we do not emit: a price, a fake star rating, or an FAQ schema for questions that are not on the page. Stars belong to the Google Business Profile when they are real. A number we have not measured does not belong in markup.
What does a Google Business Profile do?
A Google Business Profile is the public listing that shows on Google Maps and in local search. It holds the name, address or service area, phone, hours, categories, photos, posts, questions, and reviews. For a propane dealer it is often the first thing a buyer sees on a phone.
Completeness matters because missing hours, a wrong service area, or a stale category is what a buyer reads. The service area should match the radius each plant really runs — your configured service area, not a circle copied from another office. Public pages print a 30-35 mile delivery radius as the usual circle. Your configured area is the truth.
PIMS work on the profile is Google Business Profile auto-posting, AI-drafted Q&A, and AI-drafted review responses you approve. Posts and replies are drafted. The dealer approves. We do not claim to be approved by Google, certified, or affiliated with Google. Google is named here to say what the product is.
A Maps listing is not the same thing as a website, and it is not the same thing as an AI answer. It is one public record. When NAP — name, address, phone — drifts between Maps, the site, and directories, machines and people see two businesses. PIMS tracks 52 directories per location and flags those mismatches (NAP, hours, services), including Apple Maps, Bing Places, Yelp, Foursquare, BBB, Nextdoor, MapQuest, and YellowPages.
Why do reviews with real text matter?
A review with real sentences is something a person wrote about a real stop. Star counts without text teach less. AI engines and Maps both read the words. A gated review — hidden unless it is positive — is not how this work is done. There is no review gating.
Schema rich results become eligible once there are enough genuine, crawlable reviews to qualify — Google sets and changes that bar, not us. Eligible is not commanded. We do not emit a star-rating schema node from a number we invented.
PIMS review asks are post-service SMS asks. They go to the dealer's own customers who opted in, on the dealer's say-so, with the opt-out built in. Response automation means drafting. Every response is drafted for the dealer and published on the dealer's approval.
What can an AI engine see?
An AI engine can see the HTML a server returns on the first request, if its crawler is allowed. Named crawlers include GPTBot, ClaudeBot, Google-Extended, PerplexityBot, CCBot, and anthropic-ai. If robots.txt blocks a named bot, that bot does not read the page. PIMS surfaces a one-line fix you apply. PIMS does not edit the dealer's site code.
ChatGPT, Claude, and similar retrieval crawlers do not run JavaScript. Content that appears after a browser loads a script, and is missing from the first HTML, is dark to those crawlers. Google Gemini and Google AI Overviews ride Googlebot, which can render. That is why we never say a script-heavy site is invisible to all AI. It is dark to some engines and delayed for others.
What an engine can cite is what it can fetch, parse, and tie to a named business in a place. Entity signals — a stable name, matching NAP, Organization or LocalBusiness markup, a Google Business Profile — are how a dealer becomes a thing the engine can point at. Opportunity framing, not a score without its fix list: AI currently surfaces these providers in your county; here is what to do to earn your place alongside them. The operator is not losing — they are uncredited.
If a 0–100 score is shown at all, it carries its fix list and this sentence: representative sample via web search, not a direct measurement.
What can an AI engine not see?
It cannot see a page its crawler is blocked from. It cannot see text that lives in a client-side app with an empty first HTML response. It cannot see a login wall. It cannot see a private PDF you emailed a buyer. It cannot see reviews that are not crawlable.
It also cannot be steered by a claim about its inner scoring. We do not say an engine calculates travel times, flags a business as unreliable, or runs a private score we can command. We do not say PIMS allows a set number of AI crawlers as if that were a switch we throw on someone else's site. We audit. We flag. The dealer applies the robots.txt line.
llms.txt is a static file some sites publish for machines. It is an AEO choice. It is not sold as a customer benefit. If it ships, it ships as a map of URLs, not as a promise.
How does PIMS fit this picture?
PIMS is the whole marketing department for a propane dealer in one subscription. Bill Stomp ran 87 branch offices across 12 states over a 25-year operator career, combat veteran. He's since helped 200+ propane companies. Local SEO includes radius-based rank tracking + per-location optimization for every service area you cover. AI Search (AEO) is per-engine optimization + entity-authority signals, built so AI engines can find and cite the dealer. City pages: a city page for every town inside your configured area.

ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Google, Yelp, Apple Maps, Nextdoor and the BBB are named here only to say what they are. Those are other companies' names. None of them are affiliated with us and none of them endorse PIMS.
