How does a propane company get cited by an AI engine?
An AI engine cites a propane company when it can fetch a page, parse a named business, and tie that name to a place. Crawler access, matching name-address-phone, LocalBusiness markup, a Google Business Profile, and answer-shaped pages are the inputs. They make the dealer findable. They are not a promise that an engine will name you.
What does "cited" mean here?
Cited means the engine's answer points at your URL or says your company name when someone asks who delivers propane in a town you serve. It is not a paid placement. It is not a Google Ads rank. It is not a score we can command inside someone else's model.
ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and Google are named here only to say what they are. Those are other companies' names. None of them are affiliated with us and none of them endorse PIMS.
What does the engine have to be able to fetch?
Named crawlers include GPTBot, ClaudeBot, Google-Extended, and CCBot. If robots.txt blocks a named bot, that bot does not read the page. The fix is a one-line Allow the dealer applies. PIMS flags the miss. PIMS does not edit the dealer's site code.
ChatGPT, Claude, and similar retrieval crawlers do not run JavaScript. Content that appears after a browser loads a script, and is missing from the first HTML, is dark to those crawlers. That is a fetch problem, not a content-quality problem.
What entity signals does the engine need?
A stable business name. A phone that matches the Google Business Profile. Hours that match the office. Organization or LocalBusiness markup whose visible fields match the page. For a service-area dealer, a GeoCircle of 35 miles anchored to the office, with no public street address on a pure SAB listing. That pattern is the copy-paste local-signal fix. It is not a claim about Propane Insider's own office — we do not deliver propane.
NAP drift — two phones, two names, a storefront address on a yard nobody walks into — teaches the engine there are two businesses. Matching records teach it there is one.
The Google Business Profile work is described in how propane companies use a Google Business Profile. The schema and Maps layer is in how a propane company gets found in AI answers and Google Maps.
How do you check who AI names in your county?
Ask the same questions a buyer types: who delivers propane near this town, who fills tanks in this county. Write down who the engine names. That list is the county gap. Opportunity framing: AI currently surfaces these providers in your county; here is what to do to earn your place alongside them. The operator is not losing — they are uncredited.
The free audit on this site runs that check and returns a fix list. If a 0–100 score is shown at all, it carries its fix list and this sentence: representative sample via web search, not a direct measurement. Start at the free AI visibility audit or the county-gap guide who AI names for propane in your county.
How does PIMS fit?
PIMS is the whole marketing department for an independent propane dealer, inside one subscription. AI-search setup is one of the six jobs, next to local SEO, the Google Business Profile, listings, reviews, and the vendor blog. The dealer approves what publishes. We do not print a PIMS price on this page.
Bill Stomp ran 87 branch offices across 12 states over a 25-year operator career, combat veteran. He's since helped 200+ propane companies. Those numbers belong to him. They are not your record and they are not a customer's record. Propane Insider sells software. We do not deliver propane. Homeowners looking up a local propane company should use the propane company directory. Operators start on the PIMS overview.
