Tanker Truck Rollover and Propane Spill Lead to Evacuations in Kalamazoo County, Michigan

KALAMAZOO, Mich. — A serious crash caused by distracted driving resulted in a hazardous situation that forced multiple evacuations after a tanker truck carrying propane fuel overturned on June 19, 2023, around 10:45 AM. The incident, which occurred just north of East C Avenue, was caused by a Chevrolet Equinox driver who veered across the center line, colliding with the tanker and causing it to roll over and spill fuel, according to the Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities reported that the female driver of the Equinox suffered minor injuries and was promptly transported to the hospital, while the truck driver miraculously escaped unharmed, thanks to the swift response of the firefighting team present at the scene.

Due to the immediate threat posed by the spilled fuel, a 13-hour operation was initiated, resulting in the evacuation of nearly 10 to 15 homes in the vicinity. The primary objective of the operation was to safely burn off approximately 1,600 gallons of propane to prevent an uncontrolled release, as disclosed by the sheriff’s deputies.

To ensure the safety and stability of the propane tank, six tankers were deployed in two relays. Over the course of the operation, more than 350,000 gallons of water were pumped into the affected area to effectively cool the tank and maintain its structural integrity.

The City of Battle Creek commended the Battle Creek Fire Department Hazmat Unit for their exceptional expertise and rigorous training, which allowed them to handle the highly perilous propane incident with the utmost safety and efficiency. Their prompt and professional response minimized the potential risks associated with such incidents.

Considering the crash site’s impact on traffic, drivers were advised to seek alternative routes to bypass the affected area. Authorities labored diligently to clear the wreckage and restore normalcy as quickly as possible.
