The trailer’s proprietor, in preparation for an upcoming wedding scheduled for the following Tuesday, was collaborating with three other men inside the trailer, as shared by James Loza, the Chief of the Mesopotamia Fire Department. Within the trailer’s confines were a total of four propane stoves and five propane tanks, with one of these tanks being identified as the source of the leak.

Tragedy struck when the group decided to open the rear door of the trailer, resulting in a powerful explosion that devastated the trailer itself. Adjacent to the site, another mobile trailer suffered structural harm due to the force of the blast. Additionally, a recreational building situated nearby also sustained damage to both its roof and siding as a consequence of the explosion.

The proprietor of the trailer was transported via air ambulance to a specialized burn unit at Akron Children’s Hospital. Meanwhile, the other two injured men were taken to hospitals within Trumbull County, while the fourth individual received transportation to a hospital located in Geauga County. Thankfully, Chief Loza confirmed that all of them are expected to recover from their injuries.

In response to the incident, a total of eight fire departments were dispatched to the scene. This included five departments from Trumbull County and an additional three from neighboring Geauga County, as Chief Loza reported. The state fire marshal was slated to initiate an investigation into the incident on the forthcoming Monday. In the meantime, firefighters have captured photographic evidence of the scene in order to aid in the investigation process.

The move to LPG, commonly referred to as propane, is a response to the soaring gasoline costs that have tripled since the termination of the fuel subsidy in May. Ayodeji highlighted that using cooking gas to power his generator proves to be a financially prudent choice. “I was initially skeptical, but I decided to give it a shot because I’m open to change. Based on my experience over this past week, my fuel expenses have been slashed by 50% for now, and with the remaining gas, I’m confident it could lead to a 60% reduction,” he shared.

In 2013, Philip Obin embarked on importing hybrid carburetors capable of converting gasoline-based generators to run on LPG. Despite sluggish demand initially, nearly a decade later, Obin saw a dramatic upswing in sales. He disclosed that after the fuel subsidy withdrawal, he sold over 10,000 units in under three weeks. “The product is gaining immense popularity, largely due to the exorbitant cost of petrol, which has surged from 190 or 180 to 550 or 540 per liter across Nigeria… We label them hybrids because they provide the flexibility to operate on either petrol or cooking gas LPG,” Obin elaborated.

Obin confirmed that the transition is simple and straightforward. He clarified that you exchange the current carburetor in your generator for the hybrid model. Following that, you attach the gas cylinder using the regulator and proceed to start your generator. It’s a process as simple as described.

While some individuals harbor concerns about safety, given the use of cooking gas in generators originally designed for gasoline, Obin emphasized that there have been no reported incidents linked to the hybrid carburetor over the past decade.

They have not encountered any explosion incidents attributed to the use of their hybrid carburetor with generators. However, Chuks Edison, an electrical expert and generator repair specialist based in Abuja, stressed the need for caution during installation. Edison recommended, “If you decide to proceed, exercise extreme care. Put comprehensive safety measures in place and ensure your generator is in good condition without any leaks. Despite the extensive losses, Boulder is thankful that no injuries occurred and the fire’s spread was contained. “The neighborhood was spared; it could have been far worse,” he expressed.

The significance of this training lies in its relevance to the daily challenges faced by firefighters. Propane is commonly used for heating homes and cooking in the region. When responding to structure fires, one of the primary tasks is to shut off the propane supply. If not properly handled, a gas line can continue to fuel the fire with propane, creating potential hazards.

During the training, firefighters learned about the connections and protocols related to propane lines and storage. Approximately 6,000 gallons of water reserves were prepared for the exercise, with four hose lines continuously active while the fires were being extinguished.

PHOENIX, AZ — An off-site airport parking lot near Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport turned into a haunting graveyard of burnt and charred cars after a massive propane fire on Thursday, July 20, 2023. Returning from their long trips, Valley residents were met with heart-wrenching scenes of destruction.

Among those affected was Kathleen Moody, who had just returned from a week-long trip to Colorado with her family. Shocked and overwhelmed, they discovered their once beloved Lexus reduced to a mere metal frame and ash. For Moody’s daughter, a yoga instructor, the car held memories as well as her livelihood, with most of her equipment stored inside.

Expressing her disbelief and grief, Moody shared, “I never thought I’d be involved in something like this. That car is my daughter’s only means of transportation, and her livelihood is in that car, so that’s what’s killing us now.”

The parking lot company, Sundance Airport Parking, offered a shuttle service back to the airport, but the family still felt disoriented, having just returned from their trip. “I have no idea how we are getting home, so we are figuring out how to deal with the shock first and then how we are going to get across town,” Moody said.

Sundance Airport Parking expressed its regret in a statement, announcing that they were cooperating with the fire department to determine the cause of the fire and were reaching out to all customers currently parked in the lot to inform them of the situation.

Despite the devastation, Moody remained resilient, saying, “Trying to stay positive. That’s the only thing we’ve got right now.”
