Propane Safety Tips During Wildfires
Wildfires pose significant risks, especially to homes and businesses that rely on propane. If you are the owner of a property that falls into that category, it is imperative that you take steps to ensure the safety and preparedness of both the people and structures under your care. Here are five essential propane safety tips to follow if wildfires should ever threaten your area:
1. Create an Emergency Plan
Work with your family or employees to create a comprehensive emergency plan. Be sure to include contact information for emergency services and your local propane supplier. Also, ensure that everyone knows how to safely turn off propane, electricity, and water in case of a forced evacuation.
2. Maintain a Clear Zone
Establish a 10-foot area around your propane tank and grill that is completely free of combustible materials such as leaves, brush, and other types of vegetation. This reduces the risk of fire spreading to your propane system.
3. Stay Informed
Have a battery-powered radio and fully charged smartphones ready to receive emergency updates and to communicate with during any possible power outages.
4. Inspect for Damage
After a wildfire, carefully inspect your property for damage. Look out for downed power lines, damaged gas lines, and dislodged propane tanks. Use flashlights instead of candles to avoid igniting potential gas leaks.
5. Call the Experts
If you suspect any damage or potential danger, contact your propane supplier and local emergency services. Do not seek to correct the issues by yourself. Have a qualified technician inspect your propane system before turning it back on.
