Propane Leak Sparks Phoenix, AZ House Explosion
PHOENIX, AZ — A devastating explosion that rocked a Phoenix neighborhood last year has been attributed to a leak in a propane line, officials have confirmed.
The incident unfolded on February 5, 2022, when emergency responders were called to a neighborhood near 32nd Street and Lincoln Drive in Phoenix. The explosion destroyed a multi-million-dollar home, while several neighboring residences suffered damage. The force of the blast caused debris to scatter across blocks, reaching as far as 36th Street.
Firefighting teams from the Tempe, Glendale, Scottsdale, and Phoenix Fire departments rushed to manage the explosion’s aftermath.
In a recent update given on August 23, the Phoenix Fire Department officials revealed that a propane leak caused the explosion. The leak originated from a propane line connected to an exterior tank. This line had been laid underground, and over time, it deteriorated due to oxidation. As a result, propane gas leaked into the house.
Due to propane’s characteristic of being heavier than air, the leaked gas found an ignition source within the home, leading to the explosive incident.
Fortunately, no injuries were reported as a result of the explosion. The incident is a stark reminder of the potential dangers associated with propane leaks and underscores the importance of regular maintenance and vigilance to prevent such occurrences.
