Port Newark Adds Propane-Powered Tractors, Wins Eco Award
Port Newark Container Terminal (PNCT) has recently integrated 20 propane-powered tractors into its fleet, marking a significant step in its sustainable practices. This initiative, part of PNCT’s ongoing efforts to reduce environmental impact, demonstrates its commitment to clean energy and operational efficiency.
Eco-Friendly Transformation at a Busy Port
The transition to propane-powered vehicles at PNCT reflects a broader move toward sustainability in port operations. Manufactured by MAFI and equipped with PSI’s advanced 8.8-liter propane engines, these tractors significantly lower emissions compared to traditional diesel engines. They boast a 99% reduction in nitrogen oxide, nearly zero particulate emissions, and lower total hydrocarbons and carbon dioxide emissions.
Operational Benefits of Propane Tractors
Charlie Ferlisi, PNCT’s Director of Engineering and Equipment Services, highlighted the dual benefits of the new tractors: “These propane-powered tractors not only meet our operational needs effectively but also advance our environmental goals. They offer a cleaner, more efficient alternative that enhances the working conditions for our staff and reduces our carbon footprint.”
A Pledge for Cleaner Ports
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey supports PNCT’s initiative, aligning with their ambitious target to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. Mike Bozza, Deputy Port Director, praised the project: “This initiative at Port Newark is a vital part of our strategy to achieve our environmental objectives.”
Celebration and Recognition
The addition of these tractors was commemorated at a ribbon-cutting ceremony at PNCT, where the Propane Education & Research Council (PERC) presented the terminal with the Energy for Everyone Hero Award. This accolade recognizes PNCT’s commitment to sustainable practices that benefit the community, the environment, and the port’s operational efficacy.
Tucker Perkins, President and CEO of PERC, commended PNCT: “By choosing propane, Port Newark is setting a standard for ports nationwide. Their proactive approach not only enhances efficiency but serves as a model for others, showcasing the positive impact of embracing alternative energy solutions.”
Cost Efficiency and Reliability
The propane tractors are also more cost-effective in terms of fuel and maintenance, offering the lowest total cost of ownership among competing fuels. Propane’s reliability and portability ensure continuous operations, even during power outages, making it a resilient choice for one of the nation’s busiest ports.
PNCT’s move towards propane-powered tractors underscores a significant shift in how ports are addressing environmental challenges and operational demands, setting a clear benchmark for others in the industry.
