Across the United States, the push to remove diesel school buses from the roads and replace them with cleaner alternatives is gaining momentum. Colorado is no exception, with plans to allocate $24 million in state and federal funds to introduce 67 electric buses across 12 school districts. However, while electric buses garner attention, a more immediate and cost-effective solution deserves consideration: propane buses.

Propane buses offer several compelling advantages that can benefit Colorado’s schools, children, communities, and the environment. Environmental justice, ensuring clean, affordable, and reliable energy and air quality for all communities, is at the heart of this choice.

Firstly, think back to the diesel school buses of your youth. What comes to mind? Likely, it’s the fumes and noise. Unfortunately, the situation hasn’t changed much. Conversely, propane buses eliminate the black smoke associated with diesel emissions and significantly reduce harmful pollutants like nitrogen oxides and carbon dioxide, known triggers for respiratory issues such as asthma and bronchitis.

Research from Georgia State University suggests a link between lower-emission bus exhaust, such as propane buses, and improved academic performance. Students riding ultra-low-emission buses tend to miss school less and achieve better test scores than those riding aging diesel buses with filthier emissions.

Perhaps the most compelling argument for propane buses is their cost-effectiveness. Operating propane buses costs about half as much as diesel buses, and school districts can purchase three propane buses for the price of one electric bus. Simple math demonstrates that $24 million in state and federal funds could put over 200 propane buses on Colorado’s roads, effectively replacing many diesel buses.

With many school districts operating on tight budgets, these savings can be reinvested in the classroom, enhancing educational opportunities. According to the World LP Gas Association, if all diesel school buses in the U.S. were converted to clean-operating propane buses, school districts could hire over 23,000 additional teachers with the savings.

Propane refueling also offers practical advantages. An onsite propane refueling station’s footprint is significantly smaller than a bank of electric chargers. Furthermore, refueling a propane bus takes minutes, while recharging an electric bus can take hours.

Consider the broader emissions picture as well. Sixty percent of the U.S. electric grid relies on coal and natural gas, making propane buses a cleaner option in terms of emissions. As demand on the grid increases, partly due to the growing number of electric passenger vehicles, so does reliance on coal and natural gas, leading to a more significant environmental impact. Propane helps address this issue.

Propane buses are not a concept for the distant future; they are here now. Over 22,000 propane buses operate nationwide, safely transporting 1.3 million students to school in 49 states, including around 400 in Colorado. They perform reliably in all weather conditions, from sweltering heat to freezing winter days, and boast an impressive range of up to 400 miles on a single tank, compared to just 120 miles for a fully charged electric bus.

Colorado should look closer at propane buses as a cost-effective, emissions-reducing, readily available alternative to diesel buses. These buses can help improve air quality, save money, and ensure a cleaner future for Colorado’s children and communities.

Colorado’s Howl Campfires has set out to change that with its robust Howl R4 portable propane fire pit, boasting a remarkable 61,800-BTU output and radiant tubes that deliver scorching 1,200 °F (650 °C) heat, rivaling the warmth of a traditional wood fire.

The inspiration for the Howl R4 came from a group of outdoor enthusiasts who found themselves shivering during a particularly chilly camping trip in Utah. The propane fire pit they had brought along failed to provide sufficient heat, leaving them cold and uncomfortable. At the same time, a windscreen protects against winds of up to 60 mph (96.5 km/h), ensuring the flame stays steady even in adverse conditions.

To prevent the R4’s base from heating the ground and potentially starting fires with dry vegetation, the fire pit is equipped with mirror-coated reflectors that redirect the radiation outward, keeping the foot cool.

In terms of design, Howl has departed from the standard round shape of most gas fire pits. While the R4 isn’t particularly compact or lightweight, it’s designed for efficient packing. Its legs are spaced to encircle a propane tank, minimizing the packing footprint and serving as a stable base when strapped to the tank. These legs also feature strap points for securing the fire pit to a pickup bed or trunk floor, making it easier to stow alongside other camping gear.

The Howl R4 is built to last, constructed in Colorado using 304 stainless steel for the main frame and a combination of aluminum and brass components. While it sells for $1,299, significantly higher than many portable propane fire pits, it offers a design and performance that outdoor enthusiasts will likely appreciate. For those who have experienced the limitations of cheaper propane fire pits, the promise of superior heat output and durable construction may justify the investment. The next release of the Howl R4 is scheduled for October 26, with a $100 deposit securing a spot for interested buyers.

With propane prices currently lower than the previous year and supplies well above the five-year average, Iowa’s Secretary of Agriculture, Mike Naig, urges propane consumers to prepare for the upcoming colder months and winter conditions.

“Even though we’ve been experiencing more summer-like weather lately, we must remember that colder temperatures are coming. Now is an excellent time to fill up your propane tank if you rely on it for heating your home or livestock barn,” emphasized Secretary Naig. “With propane prices lower than last year, increased supply levels, and ongoing drought conditions expediting grain drying in the fields, the conditions are favorable for propane users to prepare for winter proactively.”

Data published by the United States Energy Information Administration (EIA) as of October 4, covering the week ending September 30, revealed that national propane inventories amounted to 101.4 million barrels (mb), equivalent to 134.6 days of supply. Propane supplies in the Midwest (PADD 2) region were at 26.8 mb, a figure exceeding the previous year when stocks stood at 24.5 mb.

As of October 4, the average propane price in Iowa was recorded at $1.53 per gallon, a decrease from $1.89 a year ago. From October 2 to March 2024, the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship will compile a weekly state average propane price in collaboration with the EIA. These findings will be available in the department’s weekly fuel reports.

The Iowa Propane Stakeholders Group, formed in the autumn of 2019, was a response to propane supply challenges in the state. These challenges arose due to the demands of grain drying, driven by a late planting season coinciding with an early cold spell that amplified the requirements for livestock and home heating. Since then, Secretary Naig and the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship have maintained regular communication with a coalition of propane stakeholders. This group includes representatives from the governor’s office, members of the Iowa legislature, the Iowa Propane Gas Association, propane suppliers, and various agricultural organizations. They aim to anticipate and address potential issues within the propane supply chain. Stepping outside meant stinging eyes and a runny nose. Those with respiratory illnesses had an especially difficult time with those conditions.

These extreme weather events, among others, continue to drive up the demand for electricity in nearly every state. This puts immense strain on the electric grid, especially as older power plants are retired. This worrying combination recently led the North American Electric Reliability Corporation to predict that two-thirds of North America would face the risk of energy shortages during extreme demand this past summer.

The overburdening of the electric grid has become an all-too-frequent concern. In February 2021, Winter Storm Uri left much of Texas without power for days, including vital medical facilities such as hospitals. With severe weather conditions on the rise, hospitals must ensure they can care for patients without interruption in power supply. Reliable and resilient power sources can mean the difference between life and death. In Texas, many hospitals could continue caring for their patients thanks to backup generators fueled by propane.

These generators are engineered to operate independently of the electric grid. Propane fuel is stored on-site in tanks that can hold over a week’s supply, and unlike diesel fuel, it does not degrade over time. This exceptional characteristic makes propane generators an ideal choice for hospitals and other critical facilities that cannot afford even a momentary loss of power. The National Fire Protection Association mandates that hospitals and healthcare facilities maintain at least 72 hours of on-site fuel storage for strength or operational support.

Propane offers several compelling advantages for hospital facility managers seeking clean energy solutions. It is significantly cleaner than oil and diesel and is recognized as a clean alternative fuel by the U.S. Department of Energy. Propane is methane-free, emitting deficient levels of nitrogen oxides and virtually no particulate matter.
