Roof Fire Damages Georgetown County School Administration Building in South Carolina

GEORGETOWN COUNTY, S.C. – A fire that broke out on July 3, 2023, caused damages to the roof of the Georgetown County school administration building located on West Church Street at the J.B. Beck Administration and Education Center.

The Georgetown Fire Department swiftly responded to the incident at 12:24 p.m. and successfully evacuated district employees who were present in the building. The fire originated on the roof, and preliminary investigations suggest an explosion occurred due to a propane tank used for roof repairs. Fortunately, no one was on the roof when the fire started.

georgetown-countyDespite multiple propane tanks exploding, the fire was contained to the roof and extinguished by the firefighters. Fire chief, Charlie Cribb, reported that the roof sustained thermal damage due to the blaze. The high temperatures and soaring heat index posed a challenge for the firefighters, prompting the assistance of Georgetown County Fire EMS and Midway Fire Rescue to rotate personnel and ensure their well-being throughout the firefighting operation.

After the fire was extinguished, district employees were allowed back into the building. The Georgetown County School District confirmed on Facebook that there was no significant damage, and the building has been declared safe for reoccupation.

The fire remains under investigation, but Chief Cribb stated that no suspicious activity is suspected as the cause. To prevent incidents like this, taking advantage of the propane safety training programs available on the TankSpotter.com app and the safety consulting services provided by PropaneSafetyPro.com would be wise moves for any organization dealing with propane.
